Celebrating the Legacy of our Founder Mark Alan Neiner

Mark was the Co-Founder, Vice President and Executive Director of Planting Possibilities. He was responsible for our application and subsequent acceptance as Vocational Rehabilitation and Medicaid Waiver provider statuses, and for gaining our CARF accreditation.

Mark managed the daily operations at Planting Possibilities for our first 10 years, from planning and caring for our ½ acre garden and teaching our semi-weekly classes to administrating our Voc Rehab and Waiver services. He most enjoyed working with our Campagna Project students by developing educational and task-oriented activities designed to present work as fulfilling – and even fun.

Mark was a graduate of Purdue University and Indiana University. After a 30 year career as a project manager in commercial construction, he was happy to have made the transition to the nonprofit world. His business and work experiences were invaluable assets for Planting Possibilities.

In August 2023 we lost Mark to an early and unexpected passing. His energy and dedication shaped our organization. Mark was the heart and soul of our Campagna Academy program, having personally touched the lives of more than 200 Campagna residents who came through our program. He also helped organize softball, basketball and bowling groups to help create social connections for folks with disabilities. Mark was deeply devoted to the work of improving the lives of adults with disabilities.

In Memory of Karl Dytrych

Karl began his relationship with Planting Possibilities from its founding as a member of our Board of Professional Advisors, providing financial and business guidance. After he retired as the Director of Finance and Administrative Services (CFO) for the Catholic Diocese of Gary in 2017, he joined the Executive Committee of Planting Possibilities’ board to serve as our Treasurer with the hope of expanding his volunteer participation. He served as our Treasurer until his passing in 2025.

For 12 years, Karl shared his accounting expertise to ensure we always had our finances in order, a typically thankless but very necessary task to stand up to the scrutiny of grantors, funders, and certifying agencies. Because of his guidance, we always knew where we stood financially, and how far we could stretch into new services.

Karl was educated at Loyola University and was a US Army veteran.  He was a proud native of Chicago before moving to Munster, Indiana with his wife Marge and two children, Karly and Kyle, in 1995. He was widely known for his exceptional mind, quick wit and clever use of language.

We were fortunate to have Karl’s financial expertise to help lead our organization in the early 10 years of our existence.
